Wrist Piano is a standalone Apple Watch app for enjoying familiar melodies and practicing rhythm. It requires watchOS 10 or later. In versions that include the iPhone/iPad companion, use it to browse, preview, favorite and pin melodies. The companion is for listening and library management; performance and rhythm practice take place on Apple Watch.

iPhone and iPad companion

Search or browse the library, open a melody and choose Listen to preview it. Pause playback or adjust its volume. Favorite and pin the tunes you want to find again. With the companion installed on a paired iPhone and Apple Watch, library preferences sync through WatchConnectivity when a connection is available. Check the Apple Watch tab for connection and delivery status; a queued change is not proof of delivery. iPad supports browsing and previews but cannot pair directly with Apple Watch. These companion features require a version that includes the mobile app.

Quick start on Apple Watch

  1. Wear the watch snugly. Open Wrist Piano to enter free play.
  2. Tap a table gently with your watch hand, or tap anywhere on the on-screen keyboard. Each detected tap plays the next preset note. You control the timing; the melody supplies the pitch.
  3. Use the song-list button at the top left to choose another tune or open Listen, Practice and History.

What motion detection can and cannot do

The app senses acceleration and rotation reaching your wrist. It cannot identify which finger moved, recognize piano fingering or reliably detect every light press. Wear the watch on the hand you are tapping with. If taps are missed, increase sensitivity in the player settings. If notes trigger accidentally, lower it and rest your wrist on a stable surface. You can always use the screen keyboard.

Listen and practice

The built-in library offers familiar single-note melodies or complete themes, including Ode to Joy, Frère Jacques, Twinkle Twinkle Little Star, Happy Birthday and seasonal favorites. These are simplified melody arrangements, not full orchestral or piano scores.

Listen plays an automatic demonstration at 40–160 BPM. Practice gives a timing cue and compares intervals between notes; the first note after a pause is not scored. Free play has no required tempo.

Sound and volume

Tap the speaker button. Slide the volume track, turn the Digital Crown or tap minus/plus. The saved volume applies to play, demonstrations and replay. If silent, check that this volume is above zero, your watch's media volume and the current audio output device. Pause an active demonstration before changing activities.

Display and background behavior

On supported Always On watches, motion play can continue while the display is dimmed. watchOS controls display brightness and refresh rate; the app cannot force the screen to remain fully lit. Returning to the clock or leaving the player pauses the instrument. Check Settings → General → Return to Clock on the watch if the player disappears too soon.

History and deletion

Performances with at least two notes are saved locally, up to the latest 20 takes. These are notes and timing, not microphone recordings. Open History to replay a take. Swipe left to delete it. Uninstalling the app removes local app data.

Permissions and privacy

Motion permission enables wrist-motion play. Denying it still allows tapping the on-screen keyboard. The app has no account, ads, analytics, subscription or in-app purchases. It does not use the microphone and never uploads motion or performance data.
